Yes, J.D. The influences of Altman and DEMME are all over this film. The drug sale scene, in particular is a match for the same tension that Demme infused into the diner sequence with Ray Liotta’s psychotic in the underrated SOMETHING WILD. The tracking shots that open up BOOGIE are directly influenced by Demme and Tak Fujimoto’s roaming camera work in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. If one were to compare the “descent into hell” shot of Clarice going underground to face Lector for the first time its almost a match to Andersons entrance of the disco and the sweeping introduction to the characters that start off BOOGIE NIGHTS. The more I think of BOOGIE and that tremendous first viewing of it in the city several years back the more I realize its brilliance and importance to contemporary cinema.
